Plum is one of the fruit that can be commonly found in supermarkets in Singapore. Plum is not only delicious, but also nutritious. It can offer pregnant women many health benefits.

 

Health benefits of plums

1.  Prevent miscarriage or preterm labor

Premature labor can be very harmful to the healthy development of the babies and plum can help to prevent it. Plum is rich in magnesium. This mineral helps to relax muscle and therefore avoid premature contractions and labor.

 

2. Help to absorb iron

During pregnancy, there is a greater demand of blood to support the expecting mother as well as the growing fetus. This can lead to anemia which is usually discovered during blood test. If you suffer from anemia, many gynecologists will prescribe iron supplement. This is because iron is important for red blood cell formation. As plum contains vitamin C, this vitamin can help in the absorption of iron.

 

3. Prevent constipation

Due to hormonal change in the body which slows down the bowel movement, pregnant women may experience constipation. Plums are full of fiber which help to ease bowel movement. Bloating and hemorrhoids will be less likely to occur if you increase your daily intake of dietary fiber.

 

4. Eliminate Stress and fatigue

It is very easy for pregnant women to feel tired or stressful. Plums can help to eliminate stress and fatigue as plums are rich in antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C. These minerals or vitamins help to prevent sudden change in mood in pregnant women.

 

5. Boost immune system

Immune system of pregnant women is usually weak. With many antioxidants like vitamin C or zinc present in plum, plum will boost immune system of pregnant women. This can help prevent infection like cold and flu.

 

6. Benefit bone health

Vitamin K, calcium and vitamin D in plum are very beneficial for the healthy development of bone of the growing fetus.

 

7. Prevent high blood pressure

High blood pressure can lead to many pregnancy complications. As a rich source of potassium, plums can help to lower risk of high blood pressure as potassium can reduce tension in the blood vessel.

 

Negative effect of plum - Kidney Stones

Pregnant women should be alert of the negative effect of eating plums. Plums are high in oxalates. This will make pregnant women more vulnerable to kidney stones.

 

In conclusion, plums are healthy to eat during pregnancy. Expecting mothers should be aware of the oxalate content in plum and prevent excessive consumption.
