Some frequently asked questions about umbilical cord
1. How long it takes for umbilical cord to fall off?
Answer: Most babies' umbilical cord will fall off after about 2 weeks, but some will take longer than that.
2. Smelly and gooey cord
Answer: This can occur if your baby's cord has remained moist for any length of time that may be caused by his diaper. As your baby's cord is separating and for the first few days after it has fallen off, a yellowish or pinkish 'oozy' discharge may be visible around the area. This is normal. There is no need for concern unless there are signs of infection or the drainage continues for more than a couple of days after your baby's cord has fallen off.
3. Can I tub bath my baby while his cord is healing?
Answer: It is okay for parents to sponge bathe their babies before the cord falls off provided the cord is kept dry and clean after bath, some hospitals will provide you with some solution that you can apply on the cord after the bath. You should check with the nurses for this and follow their instruction closely.
