Mantis Mouth in Newborns

Mantis mouth refers to the uplift of neonatal oral cavity on both sides of the buccal mucosa. It is the fatty tissue under the oral mucosa. When baby sucks during feeding, it can help to enhance the negative pressure in the oral cavity and therefore help baby to suck. Almost every newborn baby will have the mantis mouth to different extent. Parents do not need to worry about this. When baby stops sucking, mantis mouth will also disappear gradually, and therefore no special treatment is needed.

There is a rumor that mantis mouth affect feeding and baby's appetite. In fact, this is baseless. If you try to get rid of mantis mouth in your newborn, it may result in oral infections for the newborn and therefore interfere with normal feeding.
