Infants At 4 Months Old: Growth Indicators

This article explains the growth of four-month-old infants in their hearing, vision, touch reception, body movement, speech and language development, communication skills and emotional development.

Hearing and Speech Development: Your baby will make some progress in speech and language development as he is already forming ideas about sounds and speech. He will make some sounds to respond to you when you talk to him. Do respond to your baby whenever he whispers or babbles. He will enjoy this process a lot. Through this interaction, the baby may also learn your ways of speaking.

Vision: Your baby is now able to follow moving objects that are in his sight. Better eye coordination also enables him to see objects that are moving towards or away from him.

Body movement: The baby is able to bend and straighten his leg. If you hold him up, he seems to be able to stand up. The baby's fingers become more and more nimble and he may be able to pick up things and hold them tightly. Furthermore, he is able to hold his head up when you carry him by the arms.

Communication Skills and Emotional Development: At this month of age, babies will like to communicate with older children. When older babies or children talk to them, they will be very happy. If your baby hears voices of children on the street or television, he will turn his head towards the source. Babies at this month start to show a preference for different people in their life. Without a doubt, they are very attached to their parents. When the parents are not around, they may show fear or demonstrate unpleasant emotions.

Weight and Height: The infant's weight will increase by about 0.6kg this month. A baby boy will have a weight of between 5.6kg to 8.6kg and a body length of 60 cm to 68cm. The baby girl will have a weight of between 5.1kg to 8.1kg and a body length of 58cm to 66cm.
