Possible Complication of HFMD

Complications from the viruses that cause HFMD are rare. But if it takes place, parents should seek help from doctors immediately.

1. Dehydration may occur as severe ulcers in the mouth make it difficult or extremely painful for your child to take food or drink. It may also result from persistent vomiting or diarrhoea which causes loss of fluid in body.

Very rare complications include brain infection such as viral or aseptic mengngitis or encephalitis. Encephalitis can be fatal.

Lung and heart infection may also occur due to the EV71 virus, but it is very rare.
